Dave's True Story at the Lowville Historical Society in New York.

Pronounced like Nowville or Wowville, Daddy-O.

Dear Music Lover -

Once in a while, something truly curious happens, even here at the edge of civilization in Northern New York. When last Thursday's Watertown Daily Times heralded the coming performance of one of our favorite bands, Dave's True Story, we could scarcely believe it. What made the impending event even more amazing was that it was to be held in Lowville....the quirky pronunciation of which you have already learned. Now, Lowville is not just a lovely, small village in the middle of nowhere, it is actually in the middle of a long, lonely road that detours from nowhere to, well, I don't know where......

.

On the night of the concert the Meadowlark contingent formed a caravan and headed down County Route 12 into a freezing rain/freezing fog/ice storm that challenged us to turn back for the hour it took to traverse a very dark 25 miles.

So you can imagine our delight when Kelly Flint, Dave Cantor and Jeff Eyrich took the stage in the graceful Victorian era performance chamber of the Lowville Historical Society before an eager crowd of about one hundred Lowvillians. Sure, to you big city guys, a 'crowd of one hundred' might seem an oxymoron. But in tiny Lowville that happy group represented 1 in 25 residents! .

.

For you music lovers who are not familiar with Dave's True Story all I can say is that describing their approach to music is quite beyond my ability. The best I can do is intensely witty, ticklishly humorous, unashamedly kinky, and fun, fun, fun!

.

Kelly and the guys bounced out most of our favorites from their first three albums during their first set including the title tune to the "Sex Without Bodies" album, "Another Hit", "Spasm", and "Ned's Big Dutch Wife" as they engaged the audience in a wonderful way that never happens in larger venues.

After intermission Kelly passed around a photo album of her handsome 18 month old son, Ben,  of which she and husband and bassist, Jeff , were understandably quite proud. What fun!

.

Not surprisingly, Kelly could not resist the urge to have some fun with the pronunciation of the town's name, a favorite source of mirth for the locals, too. "Does the river flaaaaw through Lowville?" "Yes or now?".....you get the idea.

.

The band's second set featured new songs from their upcoming album that knocked us out! Among them was an audience sing along......actually a bark along......entitled "It's a Dog's Life" Joining a hundred howling and woofing Lowvillians on a cold winter night had a weird touch of magic!

.

The closing number was the touching, old fashioned lesbian ballad "(fall into my arms) Nadine". There was scarcely a dry eye in the house.

.

If you are a lover of contemporary Jazz and are yet unaware of the great fun to be had from the music of Dave's True Story......you might wanna....take a walk on the wild side.....

And, even if you're just a hard core audiophile....hey....two of those discs are Chesky's......thereby utterly refuting the premise that audiophile recordings have to be boring!
