What makes a speaker great?
If you’ve been paying much attention to high end audio, you’ll know that great specs don’t do it; exemplary frequency response and great F3 numbers come with some pretty mediocre sounding speakers.
You’ll know that great drivers don’t necessarily do the trick either; the execution can be inept.
You’ll know that price isn’t much of an indication of performance; sometimes a sky high price is paid for great marketing instead of great product.
You’ll know that great reviews can be empty promises; there’s a big difference between being impressed and plunking down your own hard earned money.
So what is it?
Is it lack of distortion?
Well, partly.
Is it lack of secondary radiation?
That helps too.
Is it dynamic linearity?
Well, that is a biggie.
Is it an amp friendly load?
That sure doesn’t hurt.
Is it excellent rise and settle times across the band?
Certainly.
Is it precise time coherence?
At a bare minimum.
Is it realistic voicing?
Now you’re talking.
Is it the actual construction of the speaker? The care taken in choices of materials and methods?
You may have never considered that, but yes. Emphatically, yes.
Is it the art of integrating all of these things in a way that really, truly makes music?
Yes. That’s it!
There’s really not much more to say......
But, if you want to hear the adjectives anyway, here they are:
Dynamic.
Transparent.
Fast, Fast, Fast.
Delicate.
Brutal.
Engaging.
Gripping.
Devastating.
